Hinton Healthcare Foundation to Purchase Hinton Medical Clinic, Securing Vital Healthcare Services for the Community

For Immediate Release – October 9, 2025 – Hinton, AB

The Hinton Healthcare Foundation (HHF), a community-run non-profit, is proud to announce its purchase of the Hinton Medical Clinic—an essential step toward securing long-term healthcare services for the residents of Hinton.

Since Mable Lee’s pioneering penny drive in the 1990s, HHF has been dedicated to improving healthcare in our region. Over the past 30 years, the Foundation has provided specialized equipment and resources to improve patient outcomes at the Hinton Health Care Centre.

When the current owners of the Hinton Medical Clinic (HMC) sought to divest the property, the community faced the real risk of losing the clinic—and with it, critical services such as obstetrics. All of the local family doctors who work in a clinic and also have hospital privileges work at Hinton Medical Clinic, making its continued operation vital to healthcare delivery in Hinton.

Recognizing the urgency, HHF stepped forward to secure 50% of the purchase cost and requested the Town of Hinton to partner in the acquisition. On Tuesday, Hinton Town Council passed a motion to allocate a portion of previously designated clinic operating funds to cover the remaining 50%.

This strategic move ensures the clinic remains a stable, professionally managed facility that supports current physicians and attracts new ones to our community. HHF is now working to formalize a “Made in Hinton” model for community-supported healthcare, drawing on best practices from other rural communities and establishing a professional Board to oversee operations.

The impact of the Hinton Medical Clinic is profound. From July 2024 to June 2025, clinic physicians provided care to 8,223 individuals, including:
• 18,562 scheduled clinic visits
• 3,998 walk-in visits
• 9 outreach clinics to Mountain Cree Camp
• 245 home visits
• 616 Emergency Department shifts (4,928 hours)
• 172 births (C-sections and deliveries)
• 7,080 hours of inpatient coverage
• 8,760 hours of supportive living coverage (HCCC and PVL DSL)
• 52 weeks of cancer clinic coverage
• 845 anesthetics provided
• 236 elective surgeries assisted
• 33 after-hours emergency surgeries assisted

This purchase marks a significant milestone in our journey to restore the Clinic’s stability and move toward a self-sustaining future. As many of you are aware, HHF has been working diligently to ensure the Clinic can operate independently and efficiently. Our goal is to minimize reliance on municipal funding as quickly as possible, while continuing to meet the healthcare needs of our community.

Communities like Jasper, Edson, and Grande Cache have taken similar steps to secure their clinics. With this purchase, Hinton joins their ranks in ensuring sustainable, community-driven healthcare.
